Meliny & Tyler's Story
We first met Meliny and her 23-year-old son, Tyler, in June 2024 after they were displaced from their home following a family separation. After more than 35 years of marriage, Meliny suddenly found herself starting over, with no stable housing for herself and her son.
Through a connection with a local counselor, they were introduced to Transform Habersham. Working together with community partners, we quickly coordinated temporary lodging and connected them with local resources, including short-term motel housing through Ninth District Opportunity.
From the beginning, our focus was on helping them move toward stability. Volunteers provided ongoing support with food, clothing, transportation, and access to essential services. We also worked closely with Tyler to pursue employment opportunities and build independence.
Through community partnerships, Tyler secured a job and began saving toward reliable transportation. Volunteers assisted with rides until he was able to purchase a vehicle of his own. Although he later transitioned from that role, he quickly found new employment and has continued working steadily.
During this time, Meliny faced significant health challenges that limited her ability to work full-time. She began the process of applying for Social Security disability while focusing on her health and supporting her son’s progress.
After many months of perseverance and support from both community members and local organizations, Meliny and Tyler were able to secure an apartment in Baldwin. When they needed help covering the initial move-in costs, Transform Habersham stepped in to assist with their deposit.
With a place to call home, the community came together once again. Volunteers helped furnish their apartment with essential items, allowing them to rebuild their household with dignity and comfort.
Today, Meliny and Tyler are on a path toward long-term stability. While challenges remain, they now have the foundation of safe housing, steady employment, and a supportive community behind them.
