Hurley, Patti, and Denver's Story
We first connected with Hurley, Patti, and Denver in March of 2024 while they were staying at the Appletree Inn and Motel in Baldwin. After an unexpected loss of housing, they found themselves without a stable place to live. Despite having a steady Social Security income, the high cost of extended motel stays quickly became unsustainable.
After receiving short-term assistance from Ninth District Opportunity, the family reached out to our Homeless Task Force for additional support. We worked with them to create a plan and began walking alongside them as they navigated next steps.
With limited options available, the family temporarily stayed in a storage unit while searching for more stable housing. During this time, volunteers provided regular food deliveries, transportation to medical appointments, and access to community resources. Patti, who faces ongoing health challenges, was also connected with local paramedics who helped support her care and overall well-being.
Securing affordable housing proved to be one of the biggest obstacles, with long waiting lists across the region. Through persistence and coordination with community partners, a suitable home was eventually identified within their budget, allowing the family to transition back into stable housing.
Local partners played a vital role in making that transition possible. Pastor Debbie Roach and the all-volunteer Helps Ministry at The River Church furnished the home with essential appliances, furniture, and household items—creating a safe and welcoming environment for the family.
At the same time, Denver, Patti’s son, was able to reengage in his education through connections with local school leaders and the Success Academy. With the support of both educators and extended family, he is now back on a positive path.
Today, Hurley, Patti, and Denver are in stable housing and continuing to move forward. Their story reflects the impact of consistent support, strong partnerships, and a community working together to create lasting change.
